Being funny makes you look smart.
It's an established fact that a good sense of humor is highly correlated with genius. I say this partly because when you say "it's an established fact" no one ever checks to see if it really is. Whether it's true or not makes no difference. All that matters is that people think humor is correlated with genius. Therefore, the more humor you bring to work, the smarter you look. In the business world, a false image of intelligence is a valuable asset for your career. In the fact, fake intelligence is even more useful than real intelligence. People who are genuinely smart get peevish during meetings because they have the misfortune to understand what's going on. But if you're only pretending to be smart, the pay is the same as if you actually are smart, and almost nothing can ruin your day.
